Principal’s Message

KAYA, and Welcome back to all Students and Staff.

Congratulations to all of our Year 11 & 12 students for making it to the end of Semester 1. For our Year 11 ATAR students, congratulations on completing your first set of exams. These can be the hardest as it takes time to refine your exam techniques. I encourage students to use the feedback from the teachers to make changes and remember to keep practicing exams. The best way to improve results is to keep working your hardest and ask your teachers for support if there is something you don’t understand.

It was very unfortunate for our Year 10, 11 and 12 students that Country Week was cancelled again. However, I do feel we are blessed in Western Australia as we have not had the lockdowns that other states have had. I would like to thank the students from Country Week who attended school in Week 10 – I know the program Miss Read-Smith put together, which included visiting industry and community members, provided lots of valuable information.

Both parents’ nights have now been completed. Parent nights are a great opportunity for you to discuss directly with teachers how your child/children are progressing. Thank you to those parents and guardians who attended. The Year 7 information evening and the Year 10 Career Counselling night was also held late last term. We had an excellent turn-out of parents and guardians. This really demonstrated our community’s commitment to the education of their children.

Once again, we are looking forward to a very busy term with lots of events and activities.

Contributions and Charges

A big thankyou goes out to all of our parents/caregivers who have paid contributions and charges in full. We really appreciate your commitment to our school.

There is some misunderstanding in the community as to the requirement to pay the ‘charges’ components of your child’s C&C’s. Charges are the compulsory component of your child’s education program at Newton Moore, and must be paid in full to ensure the resources that are required to meet the outcomes for that subject are available to your student. The Department of Education does not provide funding for this purpose and so the school needs to reallocate funds from other priorities to cover any charges that remain unpaid by parents/carers.

Contributions, although voluntary, do make a huge difference to the school’s ability to deliver the programs at Newton Moore, and the school greatly appreciates those parents who provide their ongoing support in this way.

Lower School Deputy Principal’s Update

Learning Support Intervention Program

In Term 3, we welcome two new Student Support Officers, Dee Barry and Teschna Taylor, to our Learning Support team. The employment of these two highly experienced individuals has enabled a literacy intervention program to be developed. It is designed to complement our English classes and provide small group support to students with the goal of improving reading and writing skills.

The Learning Support program will run for 4 hours a week in addition to a student’s English classes, with students’ progress being monitored throughout Semester Two. It is a fabulous opportunity for many students to gain additional support to build their functional literacy skills. We are very excited to finally have the opportunity to get such a program off the ground at Newton Moore Senior High School.

Parent Teacher Night

A big thank you to all of the parents who braved the wet and cold to attend our Parent Teacher Night on Tuesday 20th July. The opportunity for teachers to discuss your child’s academic progress is always welcomed, and the evening was a great success.

If, for any reason, you could not attend the evening, please do not hesitate to communicate directly with teachers through CONNECT or by calling the school.

National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) 2021

Every year, all schools are required to formally recognise the supports and adjustments they provide for students with disability within the school within the NCCD process. For further information, please refer to the attached letter for parents and guardians. If you have any further questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

School Leavers Support – National Careers Institute

Make your child’s next steps into a VET career path easier. They can chat through their career options, free of charge, with a qualified career practitioner. Contact the School Leavers Information Service on 1800 CAREER (1800 227 337) or go online to find up to date, accurate careers information and advice.

OLNA Round 2 (Years 10-12)

Round Two of OLNA commences in Week 7 of this term. In order to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), students must pass all three components if they have not already pre-qualified in Year 9.

Students who have not passed some or all of the tests will need to sit the appropriate test during this time.

OLNA testing will be held at the following times:

In preparation for these tests, teachers will be supporting students to improve specific literacy and numeracy skills. We recommend that students and parents access the SCSA website below for further information, practice and example tests.

Please make sure your child is at school during this important period of time. Alternative test dates are not available for students who make arrangements to travel or undertake other activities that prevent completion of the OLNA during the testing window.

Year 11 & 12 ATAR Students – The importance of study

The time for commitment to a regular Home Study program is right now, from today. 15 to 18 hours per week has proven to be necessary for most students. When examinations loom, you will need to step this up a bit further.

Home Study includes:

• All set homework and assignments
• Completion of summary and study notes on the work covered during the day, or week, or a longer period of time
• Completing drafts and plans for discussion
• Practising of past examination paper questions
• Working on major projects
• Wide reading and viewing
• Skills practice
• Use of the revision and study guides recommended by your teaching staff
• Preparation for tests and examinations
• Set reading and extension reading
• Organising files and coursework

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

At Newton Moore Senior High School we are RESPECTFUL and RESPONSIBLE. We care about our own and each other’s WELLBEING, and we actively engage in LEARNING

For Semester One, a total of 17 008 PBS point were handed out to students. This is a great indicator that our students are following the expectations in all areas of their school day.

The PBS team and all NMSHS staff thank students for their continued commitment to following the behavioural expectations at Newton Moore Senior High school.

Dental Health Week

August 3, 2021 - August 9, 2021

• Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
• Use tooth floss or interdental brushes daily to clean in between your teeth
• Limit your sugar intake as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet
• Pay regular visits to the dentist to prevent oral health issues

This is important for children, teenagers and adults.

Year 10s Taking up the Challenge!!

Year 10 students who got involved in Work Experience at the end of Term 2 had some fantastic and varied experiences in their chosen workplaces.

Some of the industries students performed placements in included automotive, building and construction, retail, administration, childcare, hospitality and education.

Work Experience offers students the opportunity to try out a job before committing to a study path or career in that industry. Under the supervision of experienced staff, students are able to observe and participate in real life work situations, learn new skills and build their confidence in a work setting.

It can also lead to further opportunities in employment, with some students securing traineeships, apprenticeships and paid work as a result of successful placements.

Well done to all of the students who participated! You represented NMSHS with pride.

Technologies

The Certificate II Active Volunteering students have been giving up their time during Term 2 to help build the community garden at Milligan. They have completed nearly 10 hours, split over several weeks, whereby they helped to mulch, remove stumps, paving and weeds, build garden beds and do some planting. The students all thoroughly enjoyed doing the hard work and it was much appreciated by Milligan too.

HASS

Year 12 students had a chance to explore their future options at the end of last term when they did a tour of ECU’s South West Campus as part of their UniPrep course. The students started the day with a tour of the campus that included a treasure hunt activity. They then listened in rapt attention to a future student presentation with Georgina Ferreira who explained all the different courses available at ECU and also shared the exciting news of ECU’s Perth campus, next to Yagan Square, which is planned to be opened in 2025.

At the School of Business and Law students analysed data to look for areas to improve exposure on social media sites. They then attended a workshop where they created new words using prefixes and suffixes to invent new inventions and storylines.

At the School of Nursing and Midwifery students went into a simulated hospital environment and had loads of fun listening to pulses, breathing, coughing and even a observing a ‘baby’ in just born conditions.

Students finished the day with ‘Whose poo is whose?’ in the School of Science with Dr Sora Estrella where they went to two different sites on campus and collected ‘poo’ from different animals to compare and categorise.

Students who attended said the day was both incredibly enjoyable and invaluable for working out their next step after they complete their Year Twelve studies in a few short months.

Year 12 Chemistry – Organic Materials

Year 12 Chemistry students have been working hard during their final semester of Chemistry and learning about the world of Organic Materials. They have been creating and experimenting with a variety of different organic molecules.

Stars Foundation

The beginning of Term 3 has been busy. We have started a new programme with our Year 8 girls which involves PCYC Bunbury.

This will be a 10-week programme called Rock and Water which includes activities based around teenage bullying. The girls have looked at how we can deal with bullying and the importance of accepting differences in ourselves and others.

The girls that participated were Lily Sutton-Mae, Nickala Rodd, Latoya Hill, Matilda Batrick, Iesha Phillips, Isabelle Riley, Abby Burt, Clara Jones and Shannayah McConkey. The girls enjoyed participating in this session which included a healthy lunch at lunch time.

We have also started to make bracelets for our NAIDOC event this year. The girls are very excited and are enjoying making the bracelets during their Stars Foundation time.

Some of our girls who have enjoyed having a go at making the bracelets include Dakota Graham, Mikayla Pearce, Indiana Hart, Kiya Gray, Faith Ryder-Hill, Jade O’Dine and Des Farmer.

The have also decided that they would like to make earrings to sell on the day.

Clontarf

Casual Employment Forum

The Newton Moore Clontarf boys enjoyed the opportunity to meet managers from Kmart Eaton Fair and South Bunbury; Woolworths Dalyellup, Bunbury Forum and Bunbury Plaza; Target and Officeworks.

The aim of the day was to match prospective casual employers with boys who are ready to start work. Boys prepared by completing their resumes and having them printed on the day, dressing and looking great, and practicing interview questions in contact time.

The day commenced with some casual pool and darts amongst ourselves and with partners, followed by the Acknowledgement to Country by Peter Woods. The Academy boys then presented a summary of some of the activities we do. These boys were Rebehl Coomer, Jacob Ozies, Elijah Brown, Destyn Romeo and Malachai Bell. Employers then conducted group and one on one mock interviews. As a result of the day, more than 10 boys were offered casual work. We then celebrated by enjoying lunch and some competitive laser tag at Real Combat Bunbury.

A big thanks to all who helped make the day a success and congratulations to the boys who represented their Academy, school and community so well.
