Principal’s Message

Kaya and Welcome to our second edition of the Schoolzine Newsletter.

Many Newton Moore SHS parents have shared their comments with me and let me know how fantastic our teachers are and just how daunting it must be to create a learning program that takes into account all the things that schools are expected to teach today. I hope those of you who attended our parent night first-hand got to see the wide range of curriculum offerings and had a chance to meet with the wonderful teachers and discuss our expectations.

Just a reminder how important it is that you stay connected to the school and know what is happening. Please keep your eye on Facebook, read your emails and text messages, and look for important dates on our calendar so you can put these into your dairy; and most importantly, join our connect communities. One of the things you will see when you go into connect communities is an outline of what the students are doing this year, an assessment outline and copies of your child’s homework.

As parents, you are very important to us and have a huge impact on how successful your child will be at school.

Winners of Ziggies Voucher

Once again, Ziggies, our school booklist supplier, has kindly donated $100 vouchers to the school for the Contributions and Charges draw.

These parents, along with many others, paid their contributions and charges in full by our 2020 deadline, which gave them a place in our draw.

We would like to thank all of our parents who pay their contributions and charges. These funds assist the school to provide many of the enriching programs that are run to provide opportunities for your children and benefit all of our students’ outcomes.

Year 10 subject selection for 2021

It is now time for students to start thinking about their Year 11 Pathway.

To support the decision making process, Miss Nightingale and Miss Read-Smith will be running two Information Events at the beginning of Term 2.

These sessions will include information about the WACE and WASSA, ATAR and VET pathways and the course selection process. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

Student Services Update

Containers for Change

A huge thankyou to all staff, students, families and local businesses for donating containers to our school. We have raised over $4500 to date and rising. Also, we are the NUMBER 1 performing school for money raised in the State. Our achievements are so wonderful that the school will be featured on the National Containers for Change social media sites.

All the money raised has been put straight back into supporting student programs, and purchasing resources and equipment for our students.

Let’s see how much more we can raise for the rest of the year.

Year 11 Physics

The Year 11 Physics students were straight into the process of the Investigating Scientifically strand during the first week back to school, using digital data loggers to record their investigation results. The graphs that were generated from their accurate scientific practical skills were able to be placed straight into their experiment write ups with ease and precision.

Year 12 Biology

Year 12 Biology Students using CONNECT to observe their electrophoresis results during an assessment. 

VET

Automotive School Based Traineeship

Congratulations to Frank Scibilia on securing a School Based Traineeship with P & D Autos, Bunbury.

Frank commenced the School Based Traineeship – Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology this year, working two days a week while also attending school.

It sounds like a win-win situation for Frank and P & D Autos, and we wish him all the best with his SBT.

Languages

At the conclusion of 2020, Japanese classes created Christmas cards to send to our sister-school in Japan. As we have not been able to maintain our normal lines of communication and visitation with Kawanishi Hokuryo Senior High School due to Covid-19, I thought it would be great to forward on our warm wishes and regards for the holiday season in this troubling time.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the gift-giving experience – both our Newton Moore students and the students from Kawanishi Hokuryo.

Thank you to the parents who donated Christmas craft supplies that made this activity successful.

Music

Perth Festival Partner Schools Program

On Friday the 26th of March, the Year 10, and some Year 11, Dance and Visual Arts students attended two shows at the Perth Festival. The Dance students saw the Co3 Dance Company performance 'Archives of Humanity', and the Visual Arts students went on a guided tour by the curator of 'The Gathering', Glen Iseger-Pilkington. We then had lunch in Kings Park and enjoyed the fresh air before a very long journey home through traffic.

We'd like to thank Ellie Murrary-Yong and the Perth Festival Partner Schools Program for this amazing opportunity. In the coming weeks, Newton Moore students and teachers are taking part in a few other activities as a part of this program, including a Dance incursion with the dancers from 'Archives of Humanity'; a teacher workshop on embedding Indigenous culture into curriculum; and a screening of 'Fists of Fury' dubbed over in Noongar.

Technologies

Every fortnight, students from the Certificate II Active Volunteering and Certificate II Workplace Skills and Business classes take part in wellbeing activities with Mrs McInerney. These sessions are designed to help the students learn stress management techniques that they can then apply to their own real life situations at school, home or work. We are currently doing Tai Chi, and will also explore things such as mindfulness, meditation and other support strategies and resources.

Visual Art

Year 9 Sculpture Class

The Year 9s have been looking at plastic waste and how it impacts the environment/ocean, and using that information to design and make sea creature sculptures. They have been using plastic donations as well as plastic they found discarded around the school.

HPE

Sporting Schools funding has again allowed our Year 7 students to receive expert coaching from coaches from Athletics Australia. Students are getting prepared for our Whole School Athletics Carnival which is a compulsory event for all students on Wednesday 31st March (Week 9).

Year 10 Water Safety

Georgia from Royal Life Saving attended Newton Moore SHS to deliver water safety sessions to our Year 10 students. Activities included spotting dangers in different water ways; using beer goggles to try and throw a life ring over a mannequin; deciding what they would say or do to get their friends away from danger or a dangerous situation; and practicing CPR and rope throws. Students engaged well in discussions and activities, and learnt some new skills and knowledge that they could use to save a life in the future.

Aboriginal Education

Clontarf

During Week 3 some of our Year 10 and 11 Clontarf boys ventured to Busselton to participate in a leadership camp. The aim of the camp was to understand that having a go at hard things means you might fail but if you try again and get over the shame, you will eventually get it. This was drawn out by taking on the Forrest Adventures high rope course. Here, the boys were nervous, and even scared for a bit, but each of them put their harness on and suited up. After working out the equipment and the training course they challenged themselves to the harder courses. Some eventually even conquering courses 5 and 6, the highest and hardest courses. Each boy agreed by the end that they felt great because they had conquered their fears and apprehension, and succeeded at the task. This is much like schoolwork. It can be challenging and hard, but by giving it a go, persisting, and resisting shame they can pass and graduate high school.

Overall, it was a fantastic camp set on the beautiful Geographe Bay. Well done, boys, and let's get to work at school to pass our courses and graduate down the track.

Choice Programs

MASH

MASH Students Umpiring

Congratulations to Charlotte Mills who attained her level 01 Ref accreditation from Basketball WA last week - she was invited to referee at this weekend's WABL Grading competition and wore her stripes for the first time.

It is great to see our Moore Academy of Sport and Health (MASH) athletes developing their umpiring skills, and giving back to their local sporting clubs and community. This is a vital part of our MASH program, as we develop athletes who have the ability to contribute to all facets of their sport.
