Principal’s Address
Principal’s Message
It is a pleasure to write my first newsletter report after having 12 months as Principal at Harvey Agriculture College. I am highly excited about being back at Newton Moore and I am looking forward to working again in this fantastic school. We have a lot to do over the next 6 months including the development of the next business and workforce management plan. I would sincerely like to thank all the community, students and staff members for the warm welcome back that I have received. Many thanks especially to Kylie Cattaway whose committed and able leadership enhanced Newton Moore Senior High School’s flourishing learning environment while I was absent from the school.
I am particularly impressed with the state of the art STEM centre that was finished in my absence. A special thanks needs to go the School Board and in particular our previous board chair Michael Douglas (ex-student) who was instrumental in helping us gain this beautiful new facility. If you haven't seen this new area in our school yet, we intend to open this up for viewing on the parent night. As well as the building, there is a spacious new outside grassed area for students to use. The new technologies and the opportunities for students at the school that the new resourced area brings will definitely enhance the school learning opportunities.
Digital technology is a hugely growing field. Progress in areas such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and automation will undoubtedly continue to change the nature of work. To support us with this growing field, our school is going to have further money spent on it in the design and technologies areas. We are excited by the new facilities and equipment that we will obtain, and in particular, how this will enhance student’s future job prospects and learning opportunities.
Our students should now have all received Semester 1 results. Well done to all who performed at their personal best; this is what makes us proud of our students. Thank you to those parents/guardians who took the opportunity to attend the parent evening to find out through discussions ways that we can together support your child to receive better results. Together, parents and staff can achieve a lot.
I look forward to working with all of you again to ensure that Newton Moore is a great place for students to learn and for teachers to teach. Our aim is always to ensure that the community is confident that their children are getting a great education.

For 2021 we will be partnering with Ziggies, a Western Australian owned and run company for our booklists and personal items. They supply good quality products that will support your students through their educational journey at Newton Moore SHS.
When they are finalised later this term, booklists for all year groups for 2021 will be available to parents via our newsletter, from the Connect website, or for those wanting a paper copy, by collection from the school Admin office. Ziggies will be operating a book collection day at school in late January 2021 if you don’t want home delivery. Date and times will be confirmed closer to the end of Term 4.

Deputy Principals’ Update
Year 9 OLNA
Students in Year 9 are about to sit the OLNA. You may have heard about it, but may be unsure as to what it means for your child. In 2020, as students in Year 9 were not able to prequalify for OLNA through NAPLAN, schools will provide an additional sitting of OLNA for Year 9 students only as an opportunity for them to demonstrate the literacy and numeracy standard.
To prepare our students for the types of questions they can expect and to familiarise them with the online assessment platform, we provide access to practice and example tests on a secure website. The link to the secure website for the practice and example tests is available on the Authority website at the link below under Years 11 and 12 > Assessment > OLNA > Practice and Example Tests.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy
https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal
https://www.nccd.edu.au/
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
Attendance
There are many benefits of regular school attendance; these include:
Achievement |
Students attending regularly are more likely to pass reading and mathematics assessments than students not attending school regularly. |
Opportunity |
For older students, being in school every day gives them a chance to learn more about post school destinations and scholarship opportunities, and to take the important exams they need to build a successful academic record. |
School Community |
Just by being present at school, your child is learning how to be a good citizen by participating in the school community, learning valuable social skills, and developing a broader world view. |
Importance of Education |
Your commitment to school attendance will also send a message to your child that education is a priority for your family, that going to school every day is a critical part of educational success, and that it’s important to take responsibilities seriously by going school. |
If your child is not going to attend school, please let the school know by calling 9722 2429 or sending an SMS to 0400 207 827.
If they miss a day, it is important you talk with their teachers to find out how you can help them catch up.
If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance, please contact NMSHS’s School Attendance Officer, Leisa Robertson, on 9722 2428.

ICT/Technology Report
The WA Department of Education’s tips for parents to help your children be safe and responsible online users:
Set the ground rules
- Establish rules about the types of content or information your child should report to an adult – for example, telling you about any swearing or bad words they find online.
- Set rules to make sure your child knows what information they can share or post online and the websites they can visit. This includes telling a trusted adult before posting any personal information online, including for competition entries.
- Encourage your child to use the same manners and communication they would use offline, and remind them it’s okay to report others who aren't being nice.

The year 7 Science classes this term are starting their first experiments with Bunsen burners, learning all of the safety requirements and procedures to begin their journey into discovering the excitement of the Science world.

Crest Awards
Year 7 to 11 Science students are working diligently on their own scientific investigations. These will be presented as a poster, booklet or power point in time to celebrate national Science week later in the term.

Certificate II Aquaculture
Certificate 11 Aquaculture students are enjoying learning to inoculate and grow the algae Tetraselmis suecica, which is used to feed fish larvae in hatcheries. It requires very precise skills and a sterile environment. After 7-10 days the algae are ready to be harvested and fed to the fish.

VET
Are you interested in studying at TAFE in 2021?
The Vocational Education and Training delivered to Secondary Students (VETdSS) program provides senior secondary students with the opportunity to integrate their traditional academic studies with a vocational education study pathway.
Successful completion of a vocational qualification provides students with credits towards a nationally recognised VET qualification that will give a competitive advantage to gain employment in their chosen career or undertake further training.
Students who are enrolled in a VET delivered to secondary tudents course attend a South Regional TAFE campus one or two days per week.
Technologies
Project Complete
Design Technologies students have been working on their different projects and have produced some fabulous work in their respective contexts. Both students and teachers were proud of the quality of the final product and displayed the mirrors and quilts in the library at the end of last term. During the production process, students gained valuable skills and knowledge that they can build on and use in the future.

Term 2 Shining Bright Reward Excursion
At the end of Term 2, nine Girls Academy members attended the Shining Bright end of term reward excursion. Girls who have reached 90-100% attendance and have their good standing for the term qualify for this reward.
The girls were treated to a Chinese lunch followed by laser tag. Academy staff use the shining bright reward trip to continue to develop relationships with academy members and reward those who have remained on track with attendance.

Clontarf
On Thursday the 30th of July, Clontarf partnered with SWAMS and the Department of Health to provide comprehensive Medicare health checks for our boys. Each one of our boys gets one on one time with a GP (Dr Arman) where they have the opportunity to discuss a wide range of physical and mental health topics.
Jemima also assists by measuring height, weight and blood pressure, as well as conducting eye and hearing tests. The boys get to see what a healthy amount of sugar, salt and fat is in their diets, and also broach the topics of cigarettes, alcohol and drugs.
This is Newton Moore Clontarf's third year partnering with SWAMS and bringing them onsite. Over this time, we have seen the boys become more comfortable and familiar with visiting a doctor, and discussing health issues with him.
This year we've had the added challenge of Covid-19 to deal with, so I especially want to thank SWAMS for their efforts in making the day a reality. We look forward to having them back later in the term to continue this service.
