Principal’s Address

Principal’s Message

The silly season has begun and families are likely to have a lot of activities to keep them busy in the lead up to Christmas. This time of the year is also a busy time for schools and I would like to take the time to thank our staff who have and continue to do an amazing job. They nurture, support, and work with students to get the best possible outcomes. Additionally, we have an outstanding support staff including hygiene staff, grounds staff and education support staff who are the backbone to our operations. I would like to extend a special thank you to all our staff and acknowledge the contributions they make in our students’ lives.

I extend a warm welcome to our visiting students who will be joining us as Year 7s in 2020. We have received some amazing feedback through our early transition programs and we expect that similarly students will enjoy the Orientation Day in Week 9.

I would like to remind families that students are required to have a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) at school every day to aid their learning. Students can bring a portable computer or tablet to school.

Our school community is aware that Susan Kerr was appointed as Principal at Harvey Agriculture College for Semester 2, 2019. We have been advised that she will continue in this role for Semester 1, 2020.

Paper copies will be available from Administration if you wish to collect one in person, however paper copies will no longer be posted to all parents.

ZIGGIES Educational Supplies – Supporters of Newton Moore SHS and WA Schools

For the 2020 and 2021 school years, we will be partnering with Ziggies, a Western Australian owned and run company, for our booklists and personal items. As our preferred supplier, Ziggies are offering our parents access to online ordering, cheap home delivery or collection at the school prior to start of Term 1, plus good quality products that will support your students through their educational journey at Newton Moore SHS. Ziggies also provide ongoing support to Newton Moore in the form of prize booklist vouchers, donations for graduation prizes and a financial incentive to schools in the form of rebates.

Many of you will have heard the adverts by Officeworks stating they will beat any official booklist price by 20%. Officeworks is owned by Wesfarmers, a multibillion-dollar corporation that gives nothing back to WA schools.

In contrast, last year Ziggies paid close to $400,000 dollars back to WA schools in rebates and commissions, sponsored close to $40,000 in conferences, as well as provided hundreds of free lists to assist families in need to the value of over $100,000. We encourage our parents to use the locally owned and operated Ziggies for your child’s booklist needs, and support the WA economy and Newton Moore SHS.

Booklists for all year groups for 2020 are now available to parents via our newsletter (attached), from the connect website and for those wanting a paper copy, by collection from the school Admin office.

Deputy Principals’ Update

Newton Moore Senior High School provides a comprehensive Information Technology infrastructure to support learning in the digital age. The school provides internet access and extensive wireless coverage across the whole school. Students are expected to bring their own device to school to support their learning.

We acknowledge, however, that a number of our disadvantaged families, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, may find this a significant financial burden, and are unable to provide their child with a computer. In order to support these families, we are approaching local businesses and community groups who may be able to assist by providing any computer laptops surplus to needs, for example older models but still in good condition.

Providing consistent access to a computer will assist our students to develop 21st century skills and enhance their future employment prospects. If you are in a position to assist these students, your contribution would be warmly received and acknowledged within the school community.

These are the required / recommended technical specifications we have outlined to parents and students:

• Wi-Fi, 802.11ac wireless protocol – Required.
• Battery life-at least 5 hours of battery life – Recommended.
• USB ports – Recommended.
• Minimum screen size-at least 9.7 diagonal inches – Recommended.
• Windows 10 – Recommended.
• Minimum 8GB RAM – Recommended.
• Minimum 256GB hard drive size – Recommended.

Reports in ‘Connect Now’ app:

Reports can be accessed by parents and students on the ‘Connect Now’ app from 18th December. Please ensure you have updated to the most current version to access this feature. To access reports, access the home button, tap on ‘My Children’, select the name of the child whose report you would like to see, and select Reports. To move between years, use the arrows on either side of the year.

A link to access student reports will continue to be emailed and available by accessing ‘Connect’ using any browser software (Safari, Explorer, Chrome etc). Semester 2 student reports will be available from the 18th December.

Attendance

Impact of Missing School

Absences affect learning outcomes whatever the reasons for missed days. This includes sickness, school refusal and family holidays. Even where many of the absences are explained and unavoidable, planning between the family and school may be necessary so your child gets the most out of their schooling.

This planning is often useful to help the school understand any problems or barriers preventing your child from attending school regularly. It may be necessary to review and modify any plans until regular attendance at school is restored. It is important for schools and families to work together when planning for improved attendance to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child.

If your child is not going to attend school, please let the school know by calling 9722 2429 or sending an SMS to 0400 207 827.

If they miss a day, it is important you talk with their teachers to find out how you can help them catch up.

School Value - Success

One of the School Values at Newton Moore is Success.

On Wednesday in Week 7 we had our Year 11 Awards Assembly which acknowledged and celebrated the successes of our Year 11 students.

It was a great pleasure and honour to announce and congratulate the following award winners.

Well done to all Year 11 students who have successfully completed Year 11 and are on track to receive their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and graduate from high school next year.

Mobile phone use in Public Schools

The Department of Education does not permit student use of mobile phones in public schools from the time they arrive at school to the conclusion of the school day, unless under a teacher directed educational purpose or documented at the school for medical reasons. Please note that the policy governs communication (voice, written or otherwise) using mobile devices and includes all associated accessories including smart watches which must be in ‘aeroplane/flight mode’.

At Newton Moore Senior High School there is no requirement for students to have a mobile phone at school. We do recognise that some parents/carers who for safety, security and/or emergency purposes wish to provide their children with mobile phones. For those families that prefer their child to have a mobile device in their possession whilst at school are advised that these devices and associated accessories must be “off and away all day”.

What can you do to support your child and the school?

• Negotiate appropriate use of mobile phone and associated devices based on the varied contexts your child will be in throughout the course of their days. For example: when in conversation with others, at the workplace, in the car, at the dinner table, being attended to by a shop assistant, at school etc.
• Determine, in conjunction with your child, if they require to bring a mobile device to school and if they do, how they will manage this to ensure compliance with Department of Education and school requirements.

ICT/Technology Report

Looking after your BYOD while at school

We are pleased to see many more students bringing their own device (laptop or tablet) to school. The school does not have the facility to provide secure storage for BYOD or other personal items, so students are required to keep their devices secure and protected while at school.

We highly recommend students use strong laptop bags/pouches and that devices are kept with students at all times, and taken into classes. During Physical Education lessons, bags are kept secure in the change rooms, with doors locked for the duration of the class.

Again, we recommend BYOD devices are covered by your own personal home/contents insurance as there is no school insurance cover for BYOD.

Student Services Update

Gravity and Salvation Army Food Drive

We need your help!

At the moment Gravity are doing a Food Drive in conjunction with the Salvation Army. Together they aim to assist over 4000 local families in need this Christmas.

It would be appreciated if NMSHS students, staff and parents could all drop off a non-perishable food item or a kids toy into Gravity or the Centrepoint Salvation Army display.

If you do donate you can fill out your details to go into the draw to win a Gravity Golden Ticket (a year of free Gravity!). The prize will be drawn on 15th December during the Dalyellup Christmas Festival.

Gravity is a huge supporter of NMSHS and we would love to assist Gravity and the Salvation Army achieve their goal.

Protect your skin

For best protection, we recommend a combination of sun protection measures:

• Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.

• Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ (or higher) sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.
• Slap on a hat – broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears.
• Seek shade.
• Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards.

Wordskills

NMSHS proudly acknowledges medallists at the state WorldSkills competition.

Storm Hornby (Bronze, Hospitality), Jack Slater (Bronze, Building and Construction), Tristian Harding (Silver, Brick and Block laying) and Kyeesha Forrest (Gold, Kitchen Operations) competed and won medals earlier in the year during the regional World skills competition held at South Regional TAFE.

The students travelled to Perth last week to receive their medals at the World Skills award ceremony at the Crown Casino.

Kyeesha Forrest and Tristian Harding were selected to be on the national skills team and will be competing at a National level in August 2020.

Such an amazing result! A huge Congratulations to you all.

English

The Year 7s conducted research into the design of the Australian Bank Notes, and designed their own new note, featuring noteworthy Australians, a wattle, a native bird and a significant building.

Technologies

This semester the Year 10 Mechatronics class devised and produced an electronic game. They made a “Steady Hand” game where the challenge is to follow the wire profile without actually touching it. Touching the wire sounds a buzzer and lights up an LED.

Electronics and Programming

The team from ECU Joondalup came to Newton Moore to share some new and innovative programming experiences with our Year 9 students.

Students created circuits using sensors and actuators and programmed them in Python to respond to instructions. The team also left us with some equipment to experiment with and practise our skills.

HASS

Years 7 – 10 are finishing off the year with fun and engaging activities in Term 4!

Year 7 have just finished their visual presentation of an Australian invention and entrepreneur.

West Coast Eagles visit Newton Moore!

This morning, Year 7 students were lucky enough to meet Shannon Hurn, Jackson Nelson and Chance Bateman. They spoke to students about leadership, goal setting and decision making.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

One of our school-wide expected behaviours is 'Engage online with people you know and trust' which comes under one of our expectations from the PBS Matrix; RESPONSIBILITY.

Here are some tips to help your children be safe and responsible online users:

Set the ground rules

• Establish rules about the types of content or information your child should report to an adult – for example, telling you about any swearing or bad words they find online.
• Set rules to make sure your child knows what information they can share or post online and the websites they can visit. This includes telling a trusted adult before posting any personal information online, including for competition entries.
• Encourage your child to use the same manners and communication they would use offline, and remind them it’s okay to report others who aren't being nice.

Stay involved

• Closely monitor younger children’s internet use.
• Try to keep the computer in a shared or visible place in the home.
• Be aware of how your child uses the internet and explore it with them.

Proactively guide

• Help your child understand that what they say and do online is important.
• Encourage your child to learn about online safety with fun resources from the eSafety website, like Hector’s World, and #GameOn.
• Talk to your child about personal information and why it is special and remind them how it can be used to identify or locate them.
• Bookmark a list of favourite sites you are comfortable with your child visiting and teach them how to access this list.
• Consider using filters to help manage your child's online access.

Support positively

• Advise your child not to respond to any negative messages and to report any hurtful messages they receive to you or another trusted adult.
• Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with material that worries or frightens them – this includes immediately telling a trusted adult of any concerns or uncomfortable material and how to close a web page or turn off a screen.
• If your child shows any concerning changes in behaviour or mood then talk to them or seek professional support – Kids Helpline provides free, confidential online counselling for young people, and your school may also be able to help.

On Thursday the 14th of November, the Newton Moore Clontarf Academy held its annual awards night. It was a fabulous night to recognise the achievements of the boys this year and celebrate our four graduates.

Year 12 End of Year trip

Each year the Newton Moore Clontarf Academy celebrates the achievements of our Year 12 boys who complete Secondary school. It is a fine achievement for one of our boys to graduate and worthy of celebration. It is a crucial part of our Foundation's philosophy of seeing young Aboriginal men finish school. Finishing school means pushing through trials, doing hard things, persisting and having fun along the way. For our young men finishing school means greater employment opportunities and a well-rounded character.

This year, Jackson Hill, Khy Powell, Ryan O'Dine and Tyrelle Spry Graduated Year 12. Their reward was a trip to Melbourne to see the sights. On the trip, our boys got to select some local attractions they would like to visit. This year they included the MCG, Melbourne Aquarium, Queen Victoria Markets and Chadstone shopping Centre, Melbourne Jail and the Crown complex where we bowled and played arcade games.

As well as the fun, the boys completed some community service by volunteering in a local Op shop and presented to some staff and executives of Deutsche Bank. For this presentation we had prepared a slide show about Clontarf, Bunbury and our Academy. To our surprise, the bank had just closed a 46 Billion-dollar deal only a few weeks prior to our meeting. Yet they still had the time to meet with us to hear our story.

I would encourage every boy and their family to push through school and get to the end. It’s worth it in the long run and you might even learn something along the way.

The Canteen staff and all our valuable volunteer’s would like to wish the Staff and student’s a very Merry Christmas. Thank you all again for your support throughout the year. Remember that with no valuable support, there’s no Canteen.

The Summer menu will continue for Term 1.

With the weather warming up, pop on into the Canteen for a nice fresh fruit salad, or a cold melon cup.

We are open until the 19th December and with everyone so busy with Christmas prep, marking exam and tests, we are here to help with your Brekky, Recess & Lunch orders (email or online).

Year 12 Graduation

Keynote Speaker Trudy Snow. Trudy was a member of the Girls Academy, graduated from Newton Moore SHS in 2012 and entered university to study Aboriginal Theatre at the WA Academy of Performing Arts in 2013. She has since completed a personal training course and established her well-being business, Creating Your Future, where she holds classes for women at Success Hill and Jubilee reserves in Bassendean.
