Principal’s Address

Principal’s Message
Kaya / Welcome
We are quickly heading towards the end of the year. It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through Term 3! It has even stopped raining....at least briefly.
Our Year 12 students are in their final weeks of their compulsory schooling with only a few weeks to go. Events coming up for the Year 12's are the Year 12 fun event and final assembly and, of course, the presentation evening at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre (BREC) later in Term 4. These are all important events that mark the end of 13 years of schooling.
Parents of Year 7 and Year 9 students need to know that NAPLAN scores are now being reported against four new levels. Proficiency levels include Exceeding, Strong, Developing, and Needs additional support rather than the ten bands used previously. There is a point in the Strong level that corresponds to the minimum standard that must be demonstrated by the end of Year 12 to achieve the Year 12 WACE Literacy and Numeracy requirement. ACARA has provided the Authority with NAPLAN scores corresponding to the minimum WACE requirements in Reading, Writing, and Numeracy. Previously these scores aligned with NAPLAN band 8.
We had the opportunity to have Bully Zero visit last term. This group delivers evidence-based bullying prevention workshops to schools across Australia. Bully Zero is endorsed as a trusted safety provider by the Safety Commissioner. Students from Year 7 and 8 classes attended a session on Resilience. The focus of this session was on individual ownership of behaviours through the development of fundamental emotional intelligence of students. Our young people were supported and empowered to recognise the impact of their choices on both themselves and others.
RUOK Day 2023 is Thursday, 14 September and is our National Day of Action when we remind each other that every day is the day to ask, 'are you OK?' and start a meaningful conversation whenever they spot the signs that someone they care about might be struggling with life. This is an important event on our school calendar to remind everyone how important it is to look after our physical and mental health. Our school has coordinated lots of great events and activities for the day.
Our goal at Newton Moore SHS is to provide a supportive learning environment where our students can achieve their best. We do this in a variety of ways and the most important way is in collaboration with our families and carers. We rely on your support to ensure that our school runs smoothly so that learning environments remain free of distraction.
I hope you all stay well for the rest of the term.

Year 6 NMSHS Transition Day 2023
Tuesday December 5th
Literacy and Numeracy Academic Extension Class
At Newton Moore Senior High School, we strive to raise the achievement levels of all students, understanding that academic achievement and critical thinking helps students effectively interpret the world around them.
We are pleased to share that Literacy and Numeracy Academic Extension classes have commenced for a select group of Year 8 students each Thursday. The class will provide students with the opportunity to participate in small class instruction with like-minded, like-ability students to work together on challenging learning and skill development.

Our vision focuses on providing a high level of support for all students to ensure their learning journey is successful. One of school priorities is academic achievement, understanding it’s importance in preparing students for future career pathways. Within this priority we ensure our students’ learning experiences are specific to their individual needs.
Extension deepens student knowledge, understanding and skills. Extension classes offer the opportunity for like-minded, likeability students to work together on challenging learning or skills development that may not be offered elsewhere.

Students attending the program will be afforded opportunities to participate in local, state and national competitions.
Literacy students are currently writing towards entries in the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, My Place creative writing competition. Students are asked to explore how children throughout history have used their imaginations to play, and what their play might tell us about life in the past, present and future.

Numeracy students are preparing for the Tax, Super and You Competition. Students will choose from thousands of resources to teach teens about tax, super, identity theft, running a business and more, with practical, real-world examples.
Deputy Principals’ Update
2024 Subject Selections
In 2022 we trialled an online subject selection process with only a minimal number of forms being returned to the school, delaying the finalisation of subject offerings and timetabling. As such, we have decided to return to students completing their elective subject selections for 2024 in class with the support of teaching staff and deputies in explaining the subjects to them.
Once students have chosen subjects and these have been entered, parents will receive an email with their student’s selection and allocation for 2024. We are hoping to complete this in coming weeks, allowing plenty of opportunity for parents to communicate if they wish to adjust their child’s selection.
‘ClickView’ at NMSHS

ClickView is Australia’s leading video content resource for primary and secondary schools and all students at Newton Moore Senior High School have access to this terrific resource. Both teachers and students can access:
- thousands of curriculum-aligned video content and teacher resources
- contextual on-demand TV
Teachers are able to create interactive learning resources for students to watch and complete work as they go.
All students should have access to Clickview which they can access at home to further their learning. Their username is their school email address and an activation link was sent to this school email at the beginning of the year and again in the last fortnight.
In our first year, we are now at the point of commencing the creation of our own NMSHS Connect library and embedding it further into the classroom learning across all subjects.
Please let the school know if your child is having issues with logging in to Clickview.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
The NMSHS PBS Shop opened in Week 3, and we have had lots of students coming in and using their points to ‘buy’ prizes. The shop will open for the second time in Week 6. The shop is open on Tuesday for lower school students and Wednesday for upper school students. Both of tehse shop sessions will be held at recess in the foyer of the PAC.
Another way to use the shop is via the PBIS Student App. Students can log into the School Store, buy their items, and then pick them up on the days that the shop is open. The app can also be used to see your points totals and see any comments that teachers might have left you about the points you have earnt.
The new PBS expectation is USE TECHNOLOGY SAFELY AND APPROPRIATELY so make sure you are keeping this in mind when you are in class using devices and also in the IRC during break times. The lesson will be taught in Period 2 Monday, 21 August.
The top PBS earners for each year group so far this term are
Year 7 | Year 8 | Year 9 |
Swannick, Oscar | Morgan, Zaylee | Browne, Lincoln |
Year 10 | Year 11 | Year 12 |
De Vries-Turner, Riley | Cawdell, Hamish | Martin, Amalee |
Newton Moore Stars
Charlotte Mills (Year 12) has been selected as an Olympic Change Maker for 2023 - a great achievement.
Well done Charlotte!

Student Services Update
School Nurse
If your child is unwell, please keep them at home

Many schools will ask that your child stays home if they have an illness or other condition that could be contagious.
Staying home allows them to recover, and also prevents the spread of disease throughout the school.
Generally, they should stay home if they have a fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, sore throat, trouble swallowing, rash, unusual sores, unusual spots, earache, moderate to severe headache, moderate muscle ache, muscle pain, wheezing, difficulty breathing, red or burning eyes, or head lice.
They will also need to stay home if they are coughing, sneezing, or congested.
Stay home until the symptoms have decreased without medication for a period of 24 hours, if possible.

Learning Areas
Science
Year 11 Human Biology students learnt about the properties of DNA and how they can be used in biotechnologies such as gel electrophoresis. Their practice today was a simulation to determine parentage. They used real life biotechnology skills such as micro-pipetting and gel electrophoresis tanks.

VET
Year 10 Work Experience
Year 10 students who were involved in Work Experience at the end of Term 2 had some exciting and varied experiences in their chosen workplaces.
Students performed placements in building and construction, automotive, hospitality, local government, administration, retail, hospitality, education, child care and aged care.
Work Experience offers students the opportunity to try out a job before committing to a study path or career in that industry. Under the supervision of experienced staff, students are able to observe and participate in real life work situations, learn new skills and build their confidence in a work setting. This can also lead to further opportunities in employment, with some students securing traineeships, apprenticeships and paid work as a result of successful placements.
We are very grateful to all of our fantastic employers for hosting our students for the week.
Well done to all of those students who participated, we hope you enjoyed the experience.

Aboriginal Education
Stars
Term 3 began with the 2023 Kalyakool Keyen (Forever One) Australind Naidoc Netball Carnival.
The Year 7-9 Stars students participated in round robin games versing Australind SHS, Our Lady Mercy College and Busselton SHS. The NMSHS Stars students won 3 out of 6 games, which is a great achievement considering our team consisted of first-time netballers!

The Year 11 girls had the Midwifery team from Bunbury ECU campus come in. With their up-to-date technology, they were able to demonstrate the support Midwives provide during labour. They discussed career pathways within the Health Department and the courses available at ECU. The Year 11 students are excited to attend upcoming excursions to the Bunbury ECU campus.

Clontarf
Country Week
This year we had 9 Clontarf students represent Newton Moore SHS at Country Week in AFL, basketball, soccer, volleyball and hockey. It was a fun-filled week, packed with laughter and comradery which saw the boys bond with each other and the wider school community. The road to Country Week began many months ago with fundraising via a Bunnings sausage sizzle. The boys made time on a Saturday morning to put in a shift behind the counter back in Term 1 to assist with paying their fees.

There were some great results throughout the week and important contributions made by our boys, but most importantly they all said they it was an awesome experience and would love to go again next year. Clontarf are very proud of all who made the commitment to represent the school and the time the put into training sessions.

Follow the Dream
Newton Moore SHS NAIDOC assembly is Tuesday the 12th September, celebrating the theme “For our Elders”.
