Principal’s Address
Principal’s Message
I have said on previous occasions, it is an honour and a privilege to be the Principal of Newton Moore SHS.
The first semester went so quickly, and it seems like only a week ago that I was welcoming new students on their first day of secondary school, while also catching the gazes of protective parents as they placed their students into our capable hands.
One of our key school priorities is Belonging. We want our students to enjoy school, value their learning and become good people who care about and contribute to the community. I am really encouraged by what I’ve seen, and I hope our parents are impressed by our efforts.
I want to personally thank all the parents who attended the parent’s night in Week 2. It is extremely important that parents and guardians come to these events so they can receive feedback on how their child is progressing and information on steps that can be made to support them further with their schooling.
Some of the highlights for the first half of the year have been:
- Seeing how quickly the students have grown and settled into school life.
- The amazing number of students attending the homework classes.
- The school’s initial work on the reconciliation action (RAP) plan.
- Our highly vibrant Country Week assembly
- Our many science activities such as Scientist Without Borders, F1 and Subs in Schools’ competitions.
- Our ANZAC Day Ceremony with a focus on celebrating Indigenous war soldiers.
- Our rewards programs Shining Knights, Golden Knights and our top PBS points winners.
- The Performing Arts music concert.
- The extra curricula activities that have been coordinated for students including the reading club, table tennis tournaments and the art club.
- The number of successful MASH excursions and events which occurred throughout the semester.
I am looking to the remainder of the year and in particular the leadership that emerges from our student groups and our student voice groups. We have been looking at all possible ways of engaging students in our future planning including a forum for our reconciliation strategies to be viewed, formal reports written by students being presented to the school board, and the feedback we receive from our student exec groups.
We will launch our PBS shop this term. The students receive positive behaviour points in their classes for good work for following class and school expectations. These points are saved against the student’s name. Once students receive a certain number of points, they can redeem points by making a purchase from our shop.
We look forward to working with you all again this term.
Boorda/Goodbye

Study Skills Tips – Working Collaboratively – asking for help
Do not hesitate to ask for help if you do not understand the work set or are struggling to comprehend something.
- Asking for help is a valuable skill that contributes to academic success.
- Try to become more aware of your tendency to avoid asking for help and try to reach out when needed. This can be to a friend, teacher, or parent.
- Engaging in discussions with others often offers fresh perspectives and the opportunity to clarify your thoughts. By collaborating and exchanging ideas with another person, you may enhance the development of your own ideas and uncover new ones.

Attendance
Attendance Reminder
We appreciate that with winter and the flu season upon us, student absences are on the increase. Just a reminder to all parents/carers that the school values your communication in explaining that your child has a genuine reason for their absence. We also value any communication requesting support if your child is having difficulty attending for any reason.
Ideally, as a school, we are seeking communication within the daily text messages and weekly follow up email to explain your child’s absence. This allows us to support any attendance issues that the school may be able to assist with as well as ensure your child keeps their good standing, allowing them to attend school excursions, camps and reward activities.

Clontarf
Term 3 kicked off with the last of our Clontarf State of Origin Trial games. Newton Moore was fortunate enough to have two students, Nehemiah Brown and Leon Kickett still in the running for the Melbourne tour. The day started off with a tour of Fremantle Football Club facilities at Cockburn, where ex-Docker Roger Hayden spoke to the boys about what the average day in the life of an AFL player looks like. Following the tour, it was game time, as the Southern WA team took on the North WA team. Both boys competed really well, with Nehemiah battling it out in the ruck most of the day and Leon showcasing what he is capable of up forward.
The Southern WA team eventually came out 4 goal winners. Following the game, we had a dinner to announce the WA side that will be touring Melbourne in term 4. Ex-Docker and Clontarf Alumni Michael Johnson spoke with the boys about his journey to get to the AFL and some of the challenges he has faced which was a great insight for everyone. Leon Kickett was named in the 25 man squad but unfortunately is currently a non-travelling emergency. Nehemiah missed out. With both boys still eligible to go again next year I am sure they found the experience invaluable as they were competing against some of WA’s top talent.
Follow the Dream
Students have come back from the mid-year break focused and keen to get back into their tuition at Polly Farmer Foundation - Follow the Dream afterschool sessions. With the support of their tutors and teachers, students are focusing to maintain or ideally improve on their Semester 1 results. It is a credit to the students who attend Follow the Dream for the hour after school, twice a week, to focus on their learning. I would like to also acknowledge the parents who offer their support to their child being involved, and ensuring they attend, and are committed to the program and their learning.
For further information about the program please refer to the link Follow the Dream | Polly Farmer Foundation (pff.com.au)
