Principal’s Message
Kaya/ Welcome
It is hard to believe that we are already in Week 6 of Term 2. The 2024 school year is flying past us at a rapid rate. At the beginning of term, in week 2, the Student Executives conducted our annual ANZAC Day ceremony at school. Once again, it was an outstanding event.
A special thank you to Ms Kerry Collard, CEO of Goomburrup Aboriginal Corporation; Mr Tim Thomson, representing the RSL; and Stacey Price (one of our teachers) for their support in sharing their ANZAC story. Also, a special thank you to the special guests who attended the event: Hon Don Punch MLA; Hon Steve Thomas, MLC; Hon Ben Dawkins, MLC; Jason Miguel, Mayor of Bunbury; and Brian Johnson, representing DEO and our distinguished board members, and, of course, the cadet unit who once again helped make this a memorable event.
We often hear about and see images of youth doing the wrong thing and being portrayed negatively in the media, but these events highlight the respectfulness of our students which was evident throughout the service. The program that the Student Executives and Student Service’s staff developed and delivered on the day was outstanding as befitted such a special occasion.
27th of May until the 3rd of June is Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme is, “Now More Than Ever.”
This event enables us to celebrate and gain a level of knowledge and pride in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and contributions. At Newton Moore SHS, we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Specifically, during this week, we will be taking a group of students to attend the Reconciliation Bridge Walk, which begins at the Koombana Foreshore before traversing over Koombana Bridge and finishing at the Graham Bricknell Music Shell. The need to appreciate Aboriginal culture is very important to us at Newton Moore SHS. This is why we have such a strong focus on ensuring we are working to achieve the strategies in our Reconciliation Action plan.
On Wednesday the 8th of May, we celebrated World Health Day. This year’s theme was, “My Health, My Right.”
This year’s purpose was to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, and good nutrition. I would like to take the opportunity to thank those organisations who attended, set up stalls and supported our school event. It was great to see students interacting with activities such as the exercise bike riding machine which helped make smoothies, the fitness games, and activities. The therapy dogs were once again a great hit with students.
Our Year 12 ATAR students are about to complete their first semester exams and we again wish them all the best.
At this stage of the year most of our Workplace Learning students have completed their first work placements. I would like to extend a huge thank you to all businesses that supported our students with Workplace Learning and provided opportunities for our students to experience real life activities in the work force.

Lower School Deputy Principals’ Update
Welcome back to another issue of the Schoolzine. It is amazing how much goes on between each of these publications!
Our students are given so many opportunities to show their strengths, talents, and progress in all areas of school life. This is why it is so important that students attend school every day.
Below are some important updates on events happening in Lower School:
Year 7 Information night
Moore Academy of Sport (MASH) and Science Testing
Senior School Deputy Principals’ Update
It’s been a big few weeks for our General Year 12 students who have been sitting their ESTs (Externally Set Tasks). This is a big part of their grades, and I am sure they have all put in the effort and are ready to reap the results.
Our Year 11s continue to press forward in their endeavours to ensure they are achieving the required C-grades for the year. As we approach the halfway mark, it’s a good time to reflect on what’s working and what changes need to be made for the second half of the year.
The Year 10s are in the thick of career choices and selecting subjects to achieve their goals. It’s a full-on time. Remember to access the Seniors school handbook (see link below) for all the information required.
OLNA Year 11 and 12
Our first window for Year 11 and 12 OLNA will be from the 10th of June to the 21st of June 2024. This is the first time our Year 11s and 12s will be sitting OLNA in 2024 and we remind them to access all the resources provided by the school to prepare adequately.
Access the Senior School handbook by clicking the link below.
Unlocking your Brain’s potential
Research tells us that our brains are not static organs, but instead are constantly learning, if we don’t use our learned experiences we lose it, and that we can re-wire our brains to enhance abilities and intelligence.
Some ways to achieve this:
- Commit to short, regular practice sessions.
- Ensure correct practice.
- Embrace intense practice sessions.
- Create mimicked environments.

Our log in details are:
Attendance
Good attendance habits start early!
It is critical that good attendance patterns are established in the early years. The data says that if good attendance is not established early, then the child’s high school attendance will worsen.
DID YOU KNOW:
- Students should miss no more than 9 days of school each year to stay engaged, successful and on track to graduate.
- Frequent absences can be a sign that a student is struggling with schoolwork or facing other difficulties.
- By Year 9, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than Year 8 test scores.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
- Make school attendance a priority.
- Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Do not schedule dental appointments, etc, during school time. You have 175 non-school days to do this.
HELP YOUR TEEN STAY ENGAGED:
- Monitor your child’s academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors when necessary. Make sure school staff have your current contact details so they can communicate concerns with you.
- Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school and students without many friends can feel isolated.
- Encourage your child to join meaningful after school activities, including sports and clubs.
COMMUNICATE WITH THE SCHOOL:
- Know the school’s attendance policy. (e.g., your child MUST have above 90% attendance to attend camps, reward activities and Country Week)
- Reply to all SMS’s and emails.
- Check on your child’s attendance.
- Seek help from school staff, other parents, or community agencies.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
Our current PBS focus for weeks 5-7 is:
Learning: Follow Instruction and Participate Fully in All School Activities.
It is amazing to see so many of our students following the expected behaviours every day. This allows Newton Moore SHS to remain a safe environment where learning can happen day in and day out.
It is every child’s responsibility to make the right choices when they are at school or at home.
Well done to our Y7s, who are our highest year group of point scorers! Let’s hope those older years can pick things up.
A reminder that the PBS Shop is open in the PAC Foyer at recess during weeks 3,6 & 9.
Tuesday for Y7-Y9, and Wednesday for Y10-Y12.
Admin Report
Term 2 sees the changes of the seasons to Winter.
With the cooling weather, it is important that students are dressed warmly and are sent to school wearing their jackets and long pants.
Hoodies are not permitted at school.
Jackets can be purchased from the uniform shop on Spencer St or online.
Help Us Stop The Spread
Flu season is upon us. For the safety of our school community, parents are reminded that students should stay home if unwell. If your child must stay home, this non-attendance must be reported to the school as soon as possible.

Area of Teaching: | HASS |
History (past work history): | I originally qualified and started working as a Primary School Teacher K-7, and I have also been involved with teaching across various regional and remote areas of WA, whilst working for 'Meekatharra School of the Air' which is based in Geraldton. For the last six years, I founded my passion and skills in working in the specialist field, 'Humanities and Social Sciences.’ This continues to be my preferred subject area to teach. The year levels I have mostly taught have ranged from Year 7-10. |
Philosophy about education: | I believe all students have the capability to learn when they are provided with an engaging and appropriate learning environment and effective resources. It is also essential that students adopt some personal responsibility and willingness to achieve, to make them successful both academically and or personally. I strive to consider all these factors within my teaching context. |
Personal Interests: | Spending time with my close friends and family members, horse riding, nature and beach walking treks, mini breaks away and longer holidays when get the opportunity, on my time off. |

Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes, or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes, or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness, and muscle aches.
People with the flu should rest, drink plenty of fluid and stay at home. The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic. For more information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation

Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect yourself from serious disease caused by influenza. By getting vaccinated against influenza, you can also help protect other people, especially people who are too sick or too young to be vaccinated. The more people who are vaccinated in your community, the less likely the disease will spread.
Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year.

Science
Science Specialist Showcase Evening
The Science department recently held its inaugural Science Specialist Showcase Evening with approximately 60 people in attendance.
Newton Moore Senior High School has a strong tradition of excellence in science education and the Showcase Evening provided a wonderful opportunity to share the learning and successes of our Specialist Science students. Parents, families, friends, and prospective students were able to meet our competition teams and National Science Fair ambassadors, learn from past alumni the impact our Science programs have had on their lives, and view Specialist Science student projects. Parents also learnt about new initiatives such as the digital STILE program and the Science Honours award.
There was a wonderful sense of community in the room with everyone excited about student learning opportunities and the new initiatives.
Career Practitioner
Southwest Career Expo – Year 10 HASS/ Careers Excursion.
52 students attended the Southwest Career Expo on Wednesday 8th May. The Southwest Career Expo provides students and the South-West community with plenty of solutions to career and further education questions. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to network and learn about local business, organisations, and industries. For Year 10 students, second term is also a critical time as students will start to choose their upper school subjects; or start the process of applying for TAFE. They may start thinking about tertiary institutions and or looking to apply for apprenticeships, traineeships and or work. Special thanks to Mr Jones and Ms Audino for attending, and Mrs Jones for extra supervision at school.
Careers Week
National Careers Week is 13th-19th of May.
Careers Week is a dedicated week to exploring everything about careers.
It offers the opportunity to learn about our students' interests, what jobs they like, don’t like, or would like to know more about; as well as the opportunity to explore new and exciting jobs. It is a great way to build upon the personal and social capabilities in the areas of civics and citizenship and work skills.
The objectives of National Careers Week are to develop community awareness of the concept, benefit, and value of career development, raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes, broaden horizons about careers, highlight the need for ongoing reskilling and upskilling to support careers throughout life, identify the changing nature of work and its impact on all Australians, showcase industries and the career opportunities available in them, and provide opportunities to partner with key stakeholders.
Education continues through our Careers classes where we teach students that career development is a process of managing learning, work, and leisure to progress through life. It is about gaining and using the skills and knowledge needed to plan and make informed decisions about education, training, and work. Everyday decisions and priorities affect career development. Ultimately, career development is about much more than jobs – it is about how to live your life.
While our students in Years’ 9 and 10 will participate in Career activities and events in Week 10 this term, there are numerous in-class activities taking place now. Our students are being encouraged to engage in class games such as Occupational Heads, a careers version of the game Celebrity Heads. Such games encourage conversations around careers.
Visual Art
Year 7 Students Branch Out with Artist Alex Desebrock
On April 30th, Newton Moore Senior High School hosted a fantastic workshop for our year 7 students, led by the inspiring artist Alex Desebrock.
This one-hour session was a deep dive into the world of tree drawings. Students explored various techniques alongside Alex, learning how to capture the essence of these majestic beings. The workshop went beyond just technical skills. Alex also discussed her unique artistic practice, which emphasizes "deep listening." This approach encourages artists to be present, not just with their materials, but also with the world around them.
The workshop culminated in a creative burst of activity, with students putting their newfound knowledge into practice. Their tree drawings will be on display at the prestigious Iluka Visions 2024 exhibition. This incredible opportunity allows these young artists to showcase their talent alongside established names.
The workshop with Alex Desebrock was a resounding success. Students not only gained valuable artistic skills but also experienced the power of deep listening and engagement with art. We can't wait to see their amazing artwork come to life at Iluka Visions!
HPE
Outdoor Education Fishing Excursion
Recently, Mr. Towers took a keen group of students to Indijup beach for a fishing trip. Conditions were perfect for fishing. Mr. Towers did not let the group down with every student reeling in fish! Max Laherty caught the ‘fish of the day’, a nice size Wrasse. Many Herring were caught and released as well.
Students had a terrific day catching fish, practising their knot tying and learning to try different forms of fishing, such as using lures compared to bait.
Interschool Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday the 1st of May, Newton Moore SHS took a large team of athletics to the Inter-school athletics carnival held at the Bunbury Athletics track. This team of approximately 60 students were hand selected from the recent school carnival.
The weather held off to make a great day for competing against the best from around the South West. Though we didn’t win any awards this year, students gave their best and represented the school with pride.
Notable overall performances went to the following students.
Denisha Ryder-Hill 6th placed individual.
Hayley Dickie 6th placed individual.
Byron Winder 6th placed individual.
Kayla Martin 5th placed individual.
Well done to all students who participated and represented the school!
Technologies
The year 7 Food and Fabrics class have been busy devising and creating their own scone recipe as part of their first individual task. Students had to adapt the amount of liquid to flour ratio to ensure the mixture was the correct consistency. After first making plain scones, the creations followed the next week and included banana and coconut scones, bacon and cheese, and raspberry and custard. It was a fantastic success with students doing an amazing job! Let’s hope they get some practise cooking at home…and cleaning up, of course 😊

Mother’s Day Morning Tea
The Newton Moore Stars Foundation welcomed Mums, Aunts, Grandparents etc to celebrate the importance of Mothers (or those who take on the mothering role) in the lives of our girls with a lovely Mother’s Day morning tea. Thank you to everyone who joined us! Our students had a wonderful time.
Clontarf
Our number one focus at Clontarf is school attendance! That is why we rewarded the 12 academy members who had 95% or more school attendance in Term 1 with a special pizza lunch during week 3. Congratulations to these boys! We are looking forward to that number growing in Term 2.
We had a great time celebrating the special women in our boys’ lives with our Mother’s Day lunch.
The lovely food was put together by our Year 8 students under the guidance of Clontarf staff Steve and Cammy. The special women that were here then watched a video that was put together by our boys who were quizzed on questions about their Mums, Nans, and Aunts.
A massive thank you to all the families that attended! We were so pleased to see 15 different families represented at the event and look forward to having you in our academy again soon.
Fundraiser
Clontarf students representing Newton Moore SHS at Country Week this year had the opportunity to raise valuable funds for their trip through a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle organised by the Clontarf Academy. All five boys who attended put in a fantastic shift which saw over 400 sausages sold. All of these sausages were donated by Chantelle from Woolworths at the Bunbury Forum, which is so greatly appreciated.
Both Woolworths and Bunnings are great partners of the Clontarf Foundation, and we really appreciate their assistance is helping the boys fundraise for Country Week.
A huge thank you to the Clontarf staff, Tim, Steve, and Cammy, for organising the event and giving up their time on Mother’s Day!
Sporting Industry Camp
We are off on camp this week with the Sporting Industry Camp for eligible Year 9-11s. This camp is focussed purely on sport and for those fellas who are dreaming to become elite sportsman or work in the sporting industry. The camp will include:
- A guided tour of the West Coast Eagles facility and clinic on the oval
- Employment visit at Collier Park Golf Club meeting with greenskeepers and the events team
- Tour of Optus Stadium
- Basketball match against the Belmont Clontarf Academy
Clontarf Superstar of the Month
Matthew Pickett
Matty has started the year extremely well with 91% school attendance for Term 1, along with attending every morning training session and attending the Albany Basketball camp. He also represented the academy at the City of Bunbury ANZAC Day Ceremony, helping to lay a wreath. Matty is becoming a great young leader in our academy.
Keep up the great work mate!
Follow the Dream
Welcome Jamie Rankin, Follow the Dream Tutor.
“I have been tutoring with the Follow The Dream Program since 2014. I am passionate about the benefits of the program for our indigenous students. The students come to the sessions with a purpose and we as tutors can contribute to their educational, social, and emotional needs and provide another layer of support outside of the classroom, in a safe and caring environment and in knowing that we teachers/tutors are making a difference through the rapport and relationships that are built.”
National Sorry Day & Reconciliation Week
The dates for National Reconciliation Week 27th May to 3rd of June commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue.
We will be inviting Newton Moore SHS students to participate in the Bunbury Walk for Reconciliation on the 31st of May. The usual rules for excursions will apply. Students must not have lost their good standing to attend.

MASH
Adam Road Winter Carnival
Newton Moore prides itself on giving back to the primary school carnivals from where our students came from. The school’s MASH (Moore Academy of Sport and Health) program is designed to allow this to happen.
Last week approximately 20 MASH students attended the Adam Road Winter Carnival at Hay Park. We provided umpires, referees, and coaches to cover AFL, Netball, Hockey, and Soccer. It was great to receive positive feedback from parents, spectators, and teachers on how our MASH students conducted themselves and helped organise the day.

We are seeking volunteers for our upcoming Bunnings sausage sizzle fundraiser. The fundraiser will take place on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of June and raise funds for the Year 12 graduation gowns and sashes.
If you think you can help, please contact the school, or encourage your students to add their names to the roster located in the Upper School Cafeteria.
School Board
The school board, at the next board meeting, will be focusing on looking at the topic of student behaviour. We will have a presentation by one of the deputies on the schools’ PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) program. The Board will also have the opportunity to review the schools’ behaviour data, and we will have explanations provided of strategies we are using to support students with student behavioural and emotional learning.
As part of the Board’s ongoing agenda, we are providing an overview about the staff who work in the school and their specific roles will be provided. At each Board Meeting we have students report back about priorities and strategies they would like to see happen to support what they are doing in terms of leading programs and projects in the school.
The school board plays a pivotal role about guiding what and where we are going in the future and will be spending a considerable amount of time in Semester 2 looking at priorities and directions which will be the focus of our new business plan.
